Cape Cod Rail Trail Guide: Biking from The Even'tide

One of the best parts of staying with us in Wellfleet is that you don't have to load up the car to start your day. Step outside, hop on a bike, and within minutes you can be rolling along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, one of the most beloved bike paths in New England. After decades of welcoming families to the Outer Cape, this is the recommendation we give again and again, especially to guests traveling with kids. Here's our local guide to riding the trail, straight from our front door.

What Is the Cape Cod Rail Trail?

The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows the route of the old Penn Central railroad, paved over into a smooth, flat path that runs roughly 27 miles from West Yarmouth all the way up to South Wellfleet. Because it was built on a rail bed, there are no steep hills to fight, just gentle grades, shady stretches of pitch pine and oak, cranberry bogs, kettle ponds, and salt marsh. It's paved the entire way and wide enough for families to ride side by side, which is exactly why it's such a favorite for all ages and abilities.

You don't need to ride the whole thing to love it. Most of our guests do an easy out-and-back of a few miles, stop for ice cream or a swim, and turn around whenever they've had their fill.

Getting on the Trail from The Even'tide

Here's the part we love: the trail's northern trailhead sits at LeCount Hollow Road in South Wellfleet, just up Route 6 from us. That makes The Even'tide one of the closest places to stay to the very end of the Cape Cod Rail Trail. You can start your ride practically from our door, which means no hauling bikes onto a rack and no hunting for a parking spot at a crowded trailhead.

From the Wellfleet end, the trail immediately dips into the woods and heads south toward Eastham, so you're pedaling through classic Outer Cape scenery within the first few minutes.

Where to Rent Bikes

If you didn't bring your own, there are several friendly rental shops close to the Wellfleet trailhead, so you can be riding within the hour:

• Idle Times Bike Shop — locations in Wellfleet, Eastham, and Orleans, so you can rent near us or farther down the trail.

• Little Capistrano Bike Shop — with a shop in Wellfleet and another in Eastham right by the Salt Pond trailhead.

Most shops rent everything from kids' bikes and trailers to comfortable hybrids and e-bikes, which are a lovely option if you want to cover more ground without the effort. Just ask us at the front desk and we're happy to point you to whichever shop suits your group.

The Best Stops Heading South

Riding south from Wellfleet toward Eastham, Brewster, and beyond, here are the stops we send our guests to:

Cape Cod National Seashore, Marconi Area (Wellfleet). Just a short ride from the trailhead, a spur connects you toward the National Seashore. It's worth a pause for the Atlantic views and the walking trails.

Salt Pond Visitor Center (Eastham). About six miles south, this is a natural turnaround point for a half-day ride. There are restrooms, water, exhibits about the National Seashore, and connecting bike paths down to Coast Guard Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the Cape.

Nickerson State Park (Brewster). For ambitious riders, the trail carries on to Brewster and the freshwater ponds of Nickerson State Park, a gorgeous spot for a swim and a picnic before you turn back.

Ice cream and snack stops. Half the fun of the Rail Trail is the food along the way. You'll find ice cream stands, farm stands, and cafés near the trail through Eastham, Orleans, and Brewster. We're always happy to share our current favorites.

Tips for Families

The Rail Trail is about as family-friendly as biking gets, and a few small things make the day even easier:

• Start early. Mornings are cooler and the trail is quieter, especially in July and August. You can ride right after breakfast and be back at the pool by lunch.

• Bring water and sunscreen. Shady in stretches, sunny in others, and there aren't water fountains at every turn.

• Ride your own pace. Because it's flat and paved, little ones do beautifully here. Set a turnaround landmark, an ice cream stop works wonders, and let the day unfold from there.

• Cool off after. One of the nicest parts of biking from The Even'tide is coming home to one of the largest indoor pools on Cape Cod. After a warm ride, the kids love it, and so do we.
